Frequently Asked Questions

Our FAQs explain what HERI Africa is, how we work, and the change we aim to create.

What is HERI Africa and why does it matter?

HERI Africa (Harnessing Education Research for Impact in Africa) is a Pan-African initiative putting African researchers at the centre of education research. We exist to ensure research is locally grounded, policy-relevant, and impactful — helping learners, teachers, and communities thrive. Our long-term goal is for Africa to contribute 30% of global education research by 2050.

Who leads HERI Africa and where does it operate?

HERI Africa is led by the Commission for University Education (CUE) and Mizizi Elimu Afrika formerly Zizi Afrique Foundation, working in partnership with universities, governments, research institutions, and international partners. The initiative begins in Kenya and will expand to additional African countries, with a goal of reaching at least 10 countries by 2035.

How does HERI Africa strengthen research and researchers?

We build capacity by supporting early-career and female researchers, establishing Research Chairs in priority areas, co-creating a National Education Research Agenda (NERA), and strengthening research funding and communication systems. At least 70% of funding directly supports researchers and universities.

How does HERI Africa turn research into action?

We connect researchers with policymakers, educators, and communities to ensure findings inform real decisions. Research is shared through policy briefs, digital platforms, national symposia, infographics, and the African Education Research Database (AERD) — making it accessible, engaging, and actionable.

How can individuals and organisations get involved?

Researchers, policymakers, funders, universities, and partners can collaborate on research, support capacity-building, contribute funding, or engage with our knowledge platforms. Together, we are building a strong, inclusive ecosystem where African research drives lasting change.
